MLA Rachel Notley is a long-time resident of Edmonton’s Old Strathcona neighbourhood, where she lives with her husband and two children. Prior to being elected as member for Edmonton-Strathcona, she worked as legal counsel with a variety of labour unions in Alberta and British Columbia and in the 1990s served as a ministerial advisor to British Columbia’s Attorney General.
She was first elected as MLA in 2008, and was re-elected in 2012 and again in 2015. She was sworn in as the province's 17th Premier on May 24, 2015.
Rachel Notley grew up in Fairview, in the heart of the Peace Country, and is the daughter of former Alberta ND leader Grant Notley and his wife Sandy. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the University of Alberta, and a law degree from Osgoode Hall Law School.
